Live-Tracking

Live tracking allows the visualization of the flight's track on designated internet pages while flying. For the visualization of the tracks on the internet the related servers require the GPS positions of the flight. SkyLogger transfers these GPS positions in user defined intervals to the selected serves.

The type of communication with the servers is not the same for all servers. Different visualization platforms require different so called communication protocols. The following communication protocols are supported by SkyLogger:

  • Leonardo
  • VGps

The most common protocol is the Leonardo protocol that is supported by a couple of servers worldwide. The most known servers are:

The VGps protocol is supported VGpsLive.

Before live tracking can be used it has to be configured. The settings can be found on the logging page in the preference section. After opening the preferences the tab "Live Tracking" can be selected.

As already mentioned before periodically data is sent to the live tracking servers. The interval between two data transmissions can be chosen from a selection of possible values by touching the first row. The default value is five minutes.

Remark: By choosing a shorter interval between two transmissions the data is updated on the live tracking server earlier than for a longer one. The total amount of data transferred to the server does not depend on the length of the interval. All track points are transferred in any case!

To add a server touch the green plus sign on the left. The view opens and lets you enter server specific data. First, you have to choose freely a unique name for the server. The name is only used for internal identification purposes. Afterwards, you choose the type of server: either the server uses the Leonardo or the VGps protocol.

You may enter as many servers as you like. Though often you do not like to transfer all flights to all live tracking servers at the same period of time (though this is possible), or you might like to switch off live tracking completely. In this case you deactivate the server(s). The entered server settings remain and can be activated at any time again.

Afterwards, enter in the URL field the URL to which the data has to be sent. This URL is server dependent even if the same type of server is used. In case you do not the URL please contact the server administrator. An example for the LiveTrack24 server is given at the end of the screen.

Note 1: Do not enter "http://" at the beginning of the URL. In case you did a copy&paste operation you might have to remove the copied "http://" part.

Note 2: The URL might be case sensitive (after the first slash)!

The user name as well as the password for the server have to be entered, too. You should have received them when registering an account for the server.

Remark: Only when all the data have been entered, the data can be saved and the live tracking server will be listed.

During logging flight data will be sent to all activated live tracking servers. The status of live tracking can then be seen in the navigation bar of the logging page.
